The People’s Republic of China (PRC) has responded to the United States in its (US) trade war in which it has raised tariffs on goods from China, Canada, Mexico, and many other countries around the world.
The Chinese Government has disclosed that as of April 10, 2025, all goods entering mainland China will be subjected to a 34 percent tariff, each.
According to the report by Xinhua, one of China’s most followed and popular news organs, the government’s decision is to inform the United States that the days of bullying other countries are over and it is time to do business responsibly and with respect for each other.
“The announcement follows the U.S. decision to impose “reciprocal tariffs” on Chinese exports to the United States, a move that the commission said does not conform to international trade rules, seriously undermines China’s legitimate rights and interests, and represents a typical act of unilateral bullying,” the report, confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China contains.
The announcement was issued by the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council of China on Friday, April 4, 2025.
US President, Donald Trump, issued an order increasing 34 percent tariffs on China, something Beijing has taken not lightly. President Trump’s action, which came into force as of Wednesday, April 2, 2025 against China has opened a new trade confrontation between the world’s two largest economies.
Ten percent tariff, in two different allotments, was increased on Chinese goods earlier and subsequently raised to nearly
According to Cable News Networt (CNN)’s report, The imbalance between China and the United States has been on for at least three decades, noting that China is the US’ most imbalanced trade relationship since 2000. “While China is one of the top destinations for US exports, the sheer volume of China’s exports to the US outpaced America’s exports to China by three to one in 2024,” CNN report indicates.
CNN is an American news outlet with much coverage via television.
Chinese pundits from Beijing who preferred anonymity in this report said the US President needs to understand that unlike the years following the end of World War II, things have changed and everything is evolving, including global governance.
“We are not at war with the United States. We are not in competition with them or anyone else. What we are doing is to do what is best and always ensure that no Chinese suffers because its government fails to do what it ought to do, especially by ensuring there is stability and prosperity,” one of the pundits said, adding, “We will not bow to America at any time.”
The source, a member of one of Beijing’s viable Think Tanks said the U.S. President should focus on governing America responsibly and do away with thinking that other other countries, like China, are responsible for whatever challenge America goes through on a daily basis.
“China does not blame America for anything. We only hold them responsible for their non-stop attempts to interfere in our body politics and our international relations. Business is about mutual respect. If they are not happy because we produce more goods than they do and export a lot more than they do, the best thing to do is to double up and do better. Bragging about being the world number one and the best is not all to it. Let’s do something and make other countries grow and become better nations too,” another pundit told The Liberian Investigator.
Trump has blamed China for playing a role in the fetanyl crisis. Although the U.S. President presented no evidence to substantiate his allegation against Beijing relative to the deaths of people in America as a result of the use of harmful and narcotic drugs said to have entered the US soil from Mexico, he has consistently said China is to blame.
Prior to his inauguration for the second time as President of the United States in January, Trump, on the other hand, informed journalists interviewing him at an occasion that China is a good friend of the U.S. and with the both countries working together, the world’s problems would be solved easily.
He is unpredictable and has continued to bastardize not only other countries but his predecessors too, especially former President Joe Biden and his then Vice President, Kamala Harris.
To the best understanding of Trump, Biden and Harris did not govern America well and are to blame for the country not punishing many countries around the world he thinks have done so much wrong to the United States.
During the U.S. Presidential Election campaign, Donald Trump told his supporters at one of the rallies that “If Kamala wins, you are three days away from the start of a 1929-style economic depression. If I win, you are three days away from the best jobs, the biggest paychecks, and the brightest economic future the world has ever seen.”
While Trump’s governance approach may guarantee America some dividends, it is not also short of challenges.
The Associated Press (AP) has reported that “The U.S. stock market plunged Friday following China’s retaliatory moves. They include more export controls on rare earth minerals, which are critical for various technologies, and a lawsuit at the World Trade Organization over what Trump has dubbed reciprocal tariffs.” This means there is already a decline in the U.S. market system following China’s tariff war response to the United States.
Repressive approach to global governance
Trending currently at protests from across the United States by millions of Americans who believe the U.S. President is exposing the country to harm’s way than doing good as he claims.
The have cited his government’s arbitrary closure of key institutions that have been driving the U.S. foreign policy in many dimensions. Among the agencies is the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). But, Trump has argued that USAID was manipulated and became a medium of corruption, stealing American tax dollars to support alleged criminal activities around the world and fill the pockets of certain people.
Visa restrictions: While the designation of countries for visa restriction or denial remains an issue of debate, the New York Times has reported that individual citizens from around the world will now be targeted for criticizing America and Israel.
According to New York Times, by directive of President Donald Trump, Secretary of State (U.S. Foreign Minister) Marco Rubio has ordered all U.S. diplomats overseas to restrict or deny visa to students seeking education in the U.S. as well as others seeking opportunities or greener pasture if found that their Facebook posts contain criticisms of the U.S. and its ally, Israel.
“U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio ordered diplomats overseas to scrutinize the social media content of some applicants for student and other types of visas, in an effort to bar those suspected of criticizing the U.S. and Israel from entering the country” reports New York Times.
For many years the United States has rediculed leaders from around the world for censoring free speech, refusing to practice democracy and upholding the tenets of human rights as the basic foundation of civilization. But, today, the same United States employing the measures of dictatorial system of governance and repressing people’s freedoms.
President Trump continues to criticize other countries and call them names of all kinds, and rediculing and demeaning but under his watch, for the second term, the U.S. administration has become harsher in penalizing others who disagree with (it) U.S.
