CAREYSBURG – Montserrado County Electoral District #1 Representative, Rugie Y. Barry, on Monday, January 27, 2025, broke ground for the construction of a police station in the township of Louisiana.
Once completed, the police station is expected to reduce the increasing wave of crimes that residents of Louisiana and its surrounding towns have been grappling with.
According to Representative Barry, the project marks a significant step towards enhancing security and public safety in the district. She noted that the self-sponsored initiative was undertaken in response to the community’s long-standing need for a dedicated police presence.
“For years, the people of the township of Louisiana have relied on slow response times from neighboring police stations, leaving them vulnerable to crime and lacking immediate access to law enforcement during emergencies,” said Representative Barry.
The new police station will not only provide a permanent base for officers but also serve as a community hub, fostering stronger relationships between law enforcement and the residents of Louisiana and its environs. This initiative aims to curb the growing criminal activities in the region.
Representative Barry disclosed plans to construct three police depots within the district—one in the township of Louisiana, another in Fendell, and the third in Todee. She emphasized the critical importance of security in rural areas, which she said are often overlooked in favor of more densely populated urban centers.
Highlighting the unique challenges faced by rural communities, including greater distances between towns, limited resources, and a reliance on community-based policing strategies, she expressed hope that the new station would address these issues and provide a safer environment for residents.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, William K. Mulbah, Deputy Inspector General for Administration of the Liberia National Police (LNP), expressed the LNP’s support for the project and pledged their commitment to working closely with local authorities to ensure the safety of residents.
Deputy Inspector General Mulbah also noted the difficulties faced by the LNP in renting buildings for police depots across the country due to limited budgetary allocations. He praised Representative Barry for her initiative and called on other lawmakers to undertake similar projects in their respective constituencies.
Moses White, the township commissioner, emphasized the positive impact the station would have on crime prevention and law enforcement response times. He noted that an increased police presence would not only deter criminal activities but also provide a sense of security and reassurance to the community.
According to the project engineer, the construction of the police station is expected to be completed within three months.
The groundbreaking ceremony concluded with a symbolic turning of the soil, marking the beginning of a new era of enhanced safety and security for the residents of Louisiana and its surrounding areas. The event was attended by William K. Mulbah, Deputy Inspector General for Administration of the Liberia National Police (LNP); township commissioner Moses K. White; and representatives of Montserrado County Electoral District #1.
