MONROVIA – The Grand Cape Mount County Sports Steering Committee has strongly refuted claims made by a man who identifies himself as a fetish priest, alleging that the county owes him US$500 since 2013 for purportedly using traditional powers, or “juju,” to help them win the County Meet.
Speaking to The Liberia Investigator via phone from Robertsport, Committee Chairman Mohammed K. Daramie dismissed the claims as baseless and an attempt to distract Cape Mount from its preparations for the 2024 County Meet, set to open officially on Sunday.
“Cape Mount is not a ‘juju’ county. Cape Mount is an Islamic county—dominantly Islamic, in fact. We don’t believe in juju. If the man were a Muslim, I might have taken him seriously,” Daramie asserted.
The allegations stem from a viral video in which the self-proclaimed “juju man,” known as Satellite, claimed to have provided spiritual assistance that led to Cape Mount’s victory in the football category of the 2012-2013 National County Sports Meet. He alleged that the county leadership has since refused to pay him $500 and threatened that the county would not progress to the quarterfinals until the debt is settled.
“I worked for them, but they don’t want to pay. That’s why I tied the county,” Satellite stated in the video, adding that he would not forgive Grand Cape Mount County unless the debt was resolved.
Daramie rejected the claims outright, describing them as the tactics of opponents looking to undermine Cape Mount’s focus ahead of the tournament. He expressed confidence that the county’s football and kickball teams would not only progress to the quarterfinals but also perform exceptionally well throughout the competition.
“Our teams are highly motivated, and we’re offering players $250 per game. Cape Mount is ready to prove the doubters wrong,” Daramie said.
He added that preparations for the tournament’s opening ceremony at the newly upgraded Momo Tarweh Stadium in Robertsport are complete. The venue now features nine bathrooms with water, two dressing rooms, match official rooms, ample seating capacity, and an inner fence to meet official standards.
“We’re ready to host the Chief Patron of Sports, President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, and all guests in Robertsport City,” Daramie assured.
Meanwhile, the office of Grand Cape Mount County Superintendent has issued a statement categorically condemning the allegations as baseless and defamatory.
The statement, signed by Political Liaison Officer Hashim Amadu Pabai, urged the public to disregard the video and reaffirmed the county’s commitment to transparency and accountability. It also called for those spreading the false claims to be held accountable for their actions.
Grand Cape Mount County will begin their campaign with kickball and football matches against Nimba County, followed by a clash with defending football champions River Gee in their final group stage games. Chief Patron of Sports, President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, is expected to take the ceremonial kickoff during the opening ceremony.
