Monrovia – Front Street in Monrovia was gripped by sorrow on Wednesday following the alleged suicide of a 29-year-old man, identified as Paypay Kamara, in the Syllah Yard. Kamara, commonly known as “Lucky Boy,” is reported to have used a razor blade to slain his own throat.
Ernest Wilson, Kamara’s elder brother, recounted in an exclusive interview with The Liberian Investigator that he last saw his brother on Wednesday morning. Wilson said Kamara had visited their home to assist in moving a piece of equipment outside.
“I was informed just minutes ago that my brother allegedly committed suicide. I can’t believe this because we were together earlier, and he even helped me organize things this morning,” Wilson stated, visibly distraught.
Wilson revealed that he and Kamara shared the same mother, Cecelia Togba, who currently resides in Grand Gedeh County. Their father, Sorybah Kamara, passed away last year. Despite the tragic circumstances, Wilson said the family does not suspect foul play, given the razor blade found near Kamara’s body.
The grieving brother appealed to the Liberia National Police (LNP) to release the body for burial after completing their investigations.
“I always advised my brother to abandon the street life because it leads nowhere. Our mother had nine children, and we have younger siblings to care for, but he wouldn’t listen to me as his elder brother,” Wilson lamented.
Kamara was reportedly a “zogo” who collected scraps in the Front Street community. Despite his lifestyle, Wilson noted that Kamara would return home daily. Sources told The Liberian Investigator that Kamara had spent over a year at the Monrovia Central Prison on allegations of rape and had struggled to regain stability after his release.
When The Liberian Investigator arrived at the scene, Kamara was found lying in a pool of blood with a razor blade beside him. Witnesses were visibly shaken by the incident, which has left the community in shock.
The Liberia National Police have launched an investigation into the matter, promising to uncover the circumstances surrounding Kamara’s death.
