During our primary and secondary education in Liberia, civics was a unique subject that we took to prepare us for good citizenship, and the responsibilities that go with it. In Liberia, the essence of good citizenship is deeply intertwined with the principles of community, respect for the rule of law, and active participation in nation-building. Liberia, as a country with a unique history of resilience, independence, and cultural diversity, good citizens would bear the responsibility of advancing unity and progress in a country that has seen both triumph and turmoil. It would form the bedrock of a prosperous nation, and the centerpiece to growth, development, unity, and progress. With a complex past and a promising future, Liberia’s call for good citizens to actively contribute to its nation-building is more pressing than ever.
Understanding Good Citizenship
At its core, good citizenship is a social and legal bond between an individual and the nation state, granting certain rights and imposing corresponding duties on the individual. In the context of Liberia, good citizenship is more than a legal status; it is a call to national duty to contribute to the nation’s growth, uphold its values, and work toward a shared future. It entails more than just abiding by the laws of the land, but involves active participation in community growth and development, respect for the rule of law, rights of others, and a commitment to the collective good. A good citizen understands the importance of education, environmental stewardship, and enhancing peaceful coexistence among diverse groups. In Liberia, where societal challenges such as poverty, corruption, and limited infrastructure persist, good citizenship acts as a catalyst for positive and sustainable change.
Why Good Citizenship Matters to Liberia’s Growth and Development?
Liberia is home to multiple ethnic groups. Each has a unique value and tradition; and good citizenship would respect diversity and would encourage collaboration among these groups. When national interests are prioritized over individual’s, group’s or sectional’s interests, good citizens would undoubtedly strengthen the bonds of peace, unity and harmony. It begins with a deep love for one’s country, taking pride in their nation’s heritage, symbols, and achievements, and celebrating its rich culture and history, while striving to improve areas of weaknesses.
It is established that a lawful society is a cornerstone of peace and stability, wherein good citizens obey the laws of the land, respect the judiciary, and demand accountability from public officials, who are already viewed as good citizens. This respect cultivates trust and ensures that justice always prevails, void of personal gains. Moreover, good citizens would discourage unlawful behaviors and activities, which reflects a proactive approach to upholding the rule of law.
Education and Good Citizenship
Education plays a quintessential role in cultivating good citizenship among the population. It is the most reliable institution that would instill the appropriate discipline, knowledge and understanding of what good citizens should be; and mould them to understand and respect Liberia’s unique culturally diverse communities. It also involves prioritizing other skills development; advocating for better schools, vocational and technical training centers, and scholarships that would empower young citizens with the necessary tools for economic independence.
Schools would serve as the center where students from various backgrounds would learn to appreciate each other’s differences, while focusing on shared national vision. Schools, families, and community organizations would emphasize the need for civic education, that would teach Liberians to become good citizens, know about their rights, responsibilities, and the importance of ethical behavior. To further this effort is by incorporating trainings on leadership, conflict resolution, and environmental conservation that advance good citizens with rich understanding of their civic duties. It means that civic education would be integrated in schools’ curricula, to make certain that children grow up with the unbridled understanding of their responsibilities to the nation state and their communities. It is good to note that educational institutions, civil society, and other organizations, in conjunction with the appropriate government’s institution, would form partnership to inseminate the values of good citizenship from an early age. And for those who have attained berween the ages of 25-45, a top-notch training would be designed to accommodate them.
Tolerance and Unity
As we are aware, Liberia’s recent past is marked by periods of conflict and instability. Good citizenship involves rejecting violence, embracing dialogue, and promoting reconciliation. Promoting a culture of peace, good citizens would help prevent future conflicts and ensuring lasting stability. The strength of Liberia is wrapped in its diversity; and good citizenship embraces differences, promotes inclusivity, and strives to work against tribalism and other vices. This is to recognize that unity is ideal for national growth and development; and they would encourage inter-ethnic dialogue among groups to advance harmony and reduce tension that could divide the nation state. To make certain that diversity and unity prevail in a vibrant and young democracy as Liberia’s, it must be protected by good and active citizens, who would become more vigilant, as a call to duty. They stay informed on national issues and immerse themselves in public discourse to help shape Liberia’s future. At the same time, as good citizens, they would not hesitate to hold their leaders, who are viewed as good citizens as well, accountable and support transparency and fairness in governance.
Economic Empowerment
This journey, by Liberia toward good citizenship, would not be attained without challenges. There are countervailing forces like corruption, poverty, and limited access to quality education that would hinder growth and national development. Consequently, to address these challenges would require collective effort from both the government and its people. Strengthening institutions, improving access to basic services, and fostering a culture of integrity are essential steps to develop good citizens. It is also good to note that economic stability contributes significantly to good citizenship. When citizens have access to employment, fair wages, and opportunities for entrepreneurship, they are more likely to invest in their communities and participate in nation-building. Supporting initiatives that provide skills training, microfinancing, and job creation would empower them economically and socially.
Community Service and Engagement
Liberia would thrive when it has good citizens who actively engage in activities in their communities for economic and social improvements. They would volunteer, mentor and contribute to community development initiatives, which reflects a commitment to a shared prosperity. This involvement builds not only stronger communities, but also instills a sense of responsibility and pride in them.
It is important to encourage them to volunteer in health, education and infrastructure projects that would cultivate a spirit of collective effort. Good citizens would attend called meetings in their communities to engage local leaders and officials, to ensure that their voices are heard in community decision-making processes. Additionally, transparency and accountability serve as vital ingredients to nurture trust between them and leaders; and advocating for open governance and active monitoring of public officials, ensuring that resources are utilized in an effective and equitable fashion.
There are some key ways to become good citizens. However, there are other characteristics listed below (not exhaustive) that would suit the description of good citizenship. They are:
- Being Vigilant
- Being a Mentor
- Being a Productive Member of Society
- Being Informed
- Being Patriotic

It is good to emphasize that the idea of good citizenship is a mixture of patriotism, responsibility, and active participation in the social, economic and political functioning of the nation state.
When citizens embrace the principles of good citizenship, they would create a more united, prosperous, and peaceful nation state. It becomes their collective responsibility that demands dedication, resilience, and a shared vision for the future.
