GANTA – An officer of the Liberia National Police (LNP) stationed in Karnplay, Nimba County, has died following a fistfight with a fellow officer over a piece of chicken.
Patrolman Elton Bahn of the Karnplay Police Detail passed away on the morning of October 25 after an altercation with another LNP officer, identified as Jeremiah Tarkpor.
Patrolman Bahn died at JFK Memorial Hospital in Monrovia, where he had been taken for advanced treatment following a fight with Tarkpor on the morning of October 23, 2024.
According to reports, the two officers—Tarkpor, a member of the Police Response Unit (PRU), and Bahn, a patrol officer—had gone to eat at a local food center near the Karnplay Police Station. The dispute began when Bahn took the last piece of chicken, a chicken foot, from the shared bowl. Tarkpor reportedly felt disrespected, believing that, as the more senior officer, he was entitled to the last piece, particularly as he claimed Bahn had already eaten more meat.
Tarkpor attempted to grab the chicken foot, leading to a struggle that quickly turned violent. Efforts by bystanders to separate the two failed, and during the scuffle, Bahn was knocked to the ground, suffering a severe spinal injury.
Bahn was initially rushed to a nearby health center in Karnplay, where he was diagnosed with a spinal cord injury. Medical personnel advised his transfer to JFK Memorial Hospital in Monrovia for specialized care. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries two days later.
Efforts to reach the LNP Nimba County Detachment for comment were unsuccessful, as the General Commander in Nimba could not be reached by phone. However, reports indicate that Officer Tarkpor is under investigation at the LNP headquarters in Monrovia.
