Rep. Kamara Boosts Passage of TEVET Commission Act

MONROVIA – Montserrado County District #14 Representative, Kerkula Muka Kamara, has celebrated the passage of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TEVET) Commission Act by the House of Representatives on June 13, 2024. The bill has since been forwarded to the Liberian Senate for concurrence.

Speaking during his second quarter legislative report on Sunday, October 13, 2024, Representative Kamara described the bill as a landmark initiative aimed at promoting and regulating technical and vocational education in Liberia. He noted that the Act is a crucial step towards equipping young people with the necessary skills and expertise to thrive in various industries and contribute meaningfully to the national development agenda.

He also highlighted several initiatives he has undertaken in line with his oversight responsibilities as the Representative for the people of District #14, Montserrado County. These initiatives, according to him, include ensuring transparency, accountability, and good governance. He mentioned monitoring the implementation of developmental projects, advocating for the needs of his constituents, and collaborating with stakeholders to address the issues affecting the district.

One of Representative Kamara’s key priorities for the district is the elevation of Marvi Sonii Elementary and Junior High School to a senior high school. According to him, this upgrade will address the challenges students in the district are facing. He noted that the 2024/2025 National Budget included an allocation of $100,000 USD for district legislative support projects, which he intended to use for the Marvi Sonii project.

“The investment in educational infrastructure will provide students with better learning opportunities and contribute to the overall development of Marvi Sonii Elementary and Junior High School and the surrounding communities in District #14, Montserrado County,” Representative Kamara said.

However, he expressed disappointment that, after the recast of the budget in September 2024, the $100,000 USD allocation was reduced to $50,000 USD by the Executive Branch due to the country’s economic challenges.

He also shared that, in August of this year, he launched a scholarship fund drive in his district to assist struggling parents in sending their children to school for the 2024/2025 academic year. He noted that, surprisingly, only 2% of the schools in the district have bank accounts, which has caused serious challenges in paying fees.

The scholarship fund drive was launched by Grand Kru County Representative and Speaker of the House, Cllr. Fonati Koffa, alongside other government officials.

Representative Kamara expressed confidence in his ability to adequately represent his constituents in the National Legislature for the next six years. He encouraged the people of the district to support developmental initiatives that will help move the district forward but emphasized that he would not impose on them when it comes to the demolition of properties in the district.

The Montserrado County District #14 lawmaker gave his second quarterly report to his constituents on Sunday, October 13, 2024. Many community members who attended the event lauded Representative Kamara for the significant progress he has made since his election as their representative. He noted that consultations are underway with his colleagues on Capitol Hill for the benefit of his constituents and the district at large.

Some community members cautioned the representative not to be selective in his developmental efforts but to ensure that all communities in the district benefit from his initiatives.
