NEW YORK – Ambassador Sarah Safyn Fyneah has resigned as Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Her resignation comes about just a few days after President Joseph Boakai returned from the UN General Assembly.
Amb. Fyneah’s resignation, according to a dispatch from New York, was accepted by UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guererres, during a meeting on October 7.
During her term, Ambassador Fyneah was a key advocate for major issues including Security Council reform, climate change initiatives, and the advancement of the Women, Youth, Peace, and Security agenda. She acknowledged President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s vital support during her tenure, attributing much of her success to his leadership. “I step down from my role with a sense of fulfillment and pride, knowing that under the leadership of President Boakai, we have strengthened Liberia’s global reputation,” she stated, appreciating the president’s confidence in her.
UN Secretary-General Guterres commended her for her commitment to advancing the principles of the United Nations, noting her role in a challenging global environment. He particularly highlighted her efforts in advocating for Liberia’s successful bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2026-2027 term.
In her parting words, Ambassador Fyneah expressed her gratitude to the UN and reaffirmed Liberia’s dedication to the organization’s goals. “It has been an immense honor to represent Liberia at the United Nations and to contribute to the global effort to promote peace, security, and human rights,” she remarked. She praised Secretary-General Guterres for leading the UN as a beacon of hope globally.
Ambassador Fyneah has had a distinguished career, beginning with initiating Liberia’s Development Diplomacy Program in Sierra Leone. Her diplomatic path has included significant positions such as Assistant Minister and Special Assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Liberia. Prior to her appointment at the UN, she served in Washington, D.C. as Minister Plenipotentiary and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Liberian Embassy, and as Chargé d’Affaires a.i. at Liberia’s Embassy and Permanent Mission to the African Union and Economic Commission for Africa in Ethiopia. Her vast experience encompasses political affairs, public information, and gender advocacy, collaborating with various governmental, international, and non-governmental organizations.
