MONROVIA – President Joseph Boakai has fulfilled only three percent of his 119 campaign promises after spending eight months in office, according to a report by Naymote Partners for Democratic Development.
Naymote released its report on the President’s performance from January to August 2024 on Tuesday. According to the report, while three promises have been fully fulfilled, 70 are still underway, and 17 have yet to see any action.
Inaugurated on January 22, 2024, President Boakai, who campaigned under the banner “Think Liberia, Love Liberia, Build Liberia,” promised significant reforms across various sectors. The President Meter Report, funded by SIDA and conducted by Naymote, monitors these commitments, particularly those outlined in the Unity Party’s ARREST (Agriculture, Roads, Rule of Law, Education, Sanitation, and Tourism) manifesto.
The report noted that most progress has been made in macroeconomic stability and infrastructure development, with one promise completed and several others ongoing. The government has initiated crucial steps in improving financial management and boosting agriculture, which are essential for Liberia’s economic stabilization.
“The Macroeconomic Stability & Infrastructure Development pillar holds a major number of the promises made by the Boakai-led government with a key focus on the economy, financial management, agriculture, and infrastructure, among others. It contains 67 of the 119 promises tracked and monitored. With this, we have tracked 1 promise as completed, 42 ongoing, 6 have not started, and 18 are not rated,” the report states.
Boakai’s administration has also made discernible advances in the health sector, with ongoing projects aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery and sanitation under the WASH initiatives. However, the human capacity development sector, focused heavily on education, reflects slower progress, signaling an area needing urgent attention for future endeavors.
“The President’s commitment for this pillar is poised at 12 promises, among which 1 promise is completed, 9 are ongoing, 1 has not started, and 1 is not rated during the reporting period,” the barometer report states.
Governance and rule of law form a crucial part of Boakai’s governance, with ongoing efforts to enhance governmental transparency and accountability. However, the fight against corruption, a central pillar of his campaign, shows all four promises are still ongoing, indicating early but incomplete efforts to tackle this endemic issue.
“A call for the ‘Fight Against Corruption’ was one of the major campaign promises of President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, Sr., during the 2023 elections. Under this pillar, the President promised to strengthen integrity institutions, declare his assets, investigate illegitimate contracts, and audit outgoing government officials. For this effort, a total of 4 promises were made, as all 4 promises are ongoing while none has been completed,” the report states.
