Monrovia – House Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa has announced that the review of Liberia’s draft recast budget has been suspended pending the conclusion of an ongoing investigation by a Special Investigative Committee, chaired by Representative Robert Wongbe. The decision was disclosed during the first day of the extraordinary session of the House of Representatives on Thursday, August 29.
The suspension follows concerns about the integrity of the budget process. Speaker Koffa emphasized that this decision underscores the House’s commitment to transparency and accountability in Liberia’s governance. “The scrutiny of the budget is a crucial process, and it is our responsibility to ensure that it is conducted with the utmost integrity and transparency,” Koffa stated. He added that the House would not proceed with any budgetary review until the committee’s investigation is completed and its findings are presented.
The extraordinary session, convened following a presidential proclamation amid growing concerns over potential budget alterations, is scheduled to continue until September 19, 2024. This special recall session highlights the urgency of the situation as legislators work to ensure the government’s fiscal responsibility.
During his address, Speaker Koffa also commended his colleagues for their unwavering dedication to public service under challenging conditions. Despite working without pay, the Representatives have returned to the Capitol to fulfill their duties. “The dedication shown by my fellow Representatives in returning to work without compensation is evidence of their commitment to the welfare of our nation. This is a collective effort to ensure that we fulfill our duties in the best interest of Liberia,” Koffa noted.
The decision to pause the budget review is seen as a significant step by the House to ensure that any irregularities are thoroughly investigated before moving forward.
