Liberia’s national amputee football team is preparing for the World Cup in Mexico after a 1-0 friendly defeat to Ghana.

MONROVIA — Liberia’s national amputee football team narrowly lost 1-0 to Ghana’s Black Challenge in a friendly as both sides intensified preparations for the 2026 WAFF Amputee Football World Cup in Mexico.

Yahaya Yussif scored the only goal in the 42nd minute, handing Ghana a victory over Liberia in the international warm-up match.

The defeat comes as Liberia fine-tunes its preparations for the tournament, which is scheduled for Nov. 13-22 in San Juan de los Lagos, Mexico.

Ghana, the reigning African champions, have been drawn into Group D alongside Angola, Colombia, and Iraq. Liberia, meanwhile, will compete in Group A alongside host nation Mexico, Italy, and Algeria.

Head coach Victor P.H.B. Benson has named a final 15-man squad for Liberia’s campaign, featuring four foreign-based players and 11 locally based players.

Matthew Joe, who plays for Pendik in Turkey, captains the squad. Other foreign-based players include Delvin M. Jusu of Konya, Darlington Vangalove Sebeh of Bursa, and Morilai R. Boakai of Konya.

The locally based contingent comprises Benedict Kollie Karbah, Isaac Tokpah, Prince Wymah, Emmanuel Paye, Junior Melawon, Moses Nuah, Matthew Bucket, Varsay Sirleaf, Emmanuel Blah, Alfred Kollie and Francis Fallah.

The players represent local clubs LASA, Survival and Conquerors.

Liberia’s delegation has been in Ghana since October, where the team processed its travel visas ahead of the competition.

The squad has also undergone X-ray examinations, while training, physical conditioning and recovery sessions have formed part of its preparations.

The 2026 Amputee Football World Cup will feature 24 national teams, including seven from Africa, competing for the global title in Mexico.
