MONROVIA — The last of the farm machinery China has donated to Liberia has arrived at the Freeport of Monrovia. The consignment fills 42 containers, and the Ministry of Agriculture says it will strengthen the country’s push toward mechanized farming and food self-sufficiency.
The ministry said 15 containers were being moved from the port Tuesday and the remaining 27 would follow in the coming days.
The arrival completes China’s donation and adds to the equipment available as the ministry, led by Minister J. Alexander Nuetah, works to move Liberian agriculture away from labor-intensive traditional methods and toward more productive, commercial farming.
The ministry said the machinery will help address long-standing obstacles to food production, including low productivity and farmers’ limited access to modern equipment. The government’s stated goal is to raise domestic food output and reduce Liberia’s dependence on imported food.
The donation reflects continued cooperation between Liberia and China on agricultural development, technology transfer and food production, the ministry said.
With the equipment now in the country, the ministry said its focus turns to distribution: getting the machinery to farming communities and making sure it is used to raise production across the country.
