YEKEPA, Nimba County – Children in Volay now have a finished public school, built with construction materials donated by ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) together with labor and resources the community raised itself. Residents and their lawmaker traveled to Yekepa to thank the company in person.
Rep. Taa Wongbe of Nimba County District 9 led a delegation of community leaders, elders and residents from District 9 to meet AML’s chief executive officer and senior management. Wongbe said the group came to acknowledge the company’s support for community projects in 2025 and to report back on how the donated materials were used.
“Our mission was simple: To say THANK YOU!” Wongbe said in a statement on the meeting.
“In 2025, AML generously contributed construction materials to support our ongoing development initiatives,” he said. “Combined with our own resources in construction, labor, logistics, and other resources, these materials helped advance several projects, including the newly completed Volay Public School.”
Wongbe said AML’s leadership told the delegation it was the first time a lawmaker had brought constituents to thank the company personally and to account for how its donated materials had been used. He said gratitude and transparency are essential to leadership and to lasting partnerships.
“Our approach is simple: Mobilize resources, build partnerships, invest in implementation, and deliver results. Every contribution matters, and every partner deserves recognition,” he said.
The Volay school is part of AML’s wider investment in the communities around its mining and rail operations. The company runs schools in Yekepa and Buchanan, supports scholarships for Liberian students, and provides medical services through facilities in Yekepa and Buchanan that serve employees and surrounding communities. Its community investments have also included road rehabilitation and other infrastructure work in Nimba, Bong and Grand Bassa counties.
“My sincere appreciation to the CEO and entire AML team for their warm reception and continued partnership,” Wongbe said.
