MONROVIA — The Initiative for Women and Youth Empowerment has trained journalists and media practitioners in Liberia to strengthen accurate and responsible reporting on family planning, contraception and sexual and reproductive health and rights, as the organization pushes for increased access to reproductive health information and services across the country.

The training, held Tuesday under IWYE’s ACCESS FOR ALL Project – Phase 2, focused on equipping media practitioners with the knowledge and messaging skills needed to improve public understanding of reproductive health issues and promote informed decision-making.

A major session centered on effective messaging and content development on reproductive health and rights, including accurate information on access to and safer use of contraceptives.

Speaking during the training, IWYE Founder and Executive Director Musu Davis said journalists have a critical role in ensuring that women, girls and young people receive credible information about their health and reproductive choices.

Davis said the ACCESS FOR ALL Project advocates increased access to quality and affordable contraceptives and sexual and reproductive health services while strengthening stakeholder engagement around Liberia’s FP2030 commitments.

She identified access, equity, health, rights and empowerment as the five guiding principles of the project, saying IWYE envisions a Liberia where women, girls, young people and communities can access reproductive health information and services without unnecessary barriers, discrimination or stigma.

According to Davis, the organization is also advocating stronger government commitment to family planning and reproductive health, increased family planning financing in the Ministry of Health’s budget and greater availability of quality contraceptive and reproductive health services.

She challenged journalists to go beyond simply acquiring information and use their platforms to encourage informed public discussion, accountability and greater investment in services affecting women and girls.

“Let us use the power of the media to inform. Let us use information to empower. And let us use our collective voices to advocate for ACCESS FOR ALL,” Davis said.

Davis said IWYE, a women- and youth-focused organization, works through advocacy, capacity building, stakeholder engagement and community initiatives to empower women and young people to participate meaningfully in decisions affecting their health, rights, well-being and future.

The media training forms part of IWYE’s broader activities under the ACCESS FOR ALL Project – Phase 2 to strengthen advocacy and public engagement around family planning and reproductive health services in Liberia.
