Police IG Says Police Will Not Be Intimidated in Drug Cases

MONROVIA — Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman said Thursday that no suspect’s political standing will keep him or her out of Liberia’s widening drug investigations, in a statement pledging that the police will not be intimidated but naming no one who has tried to intimidate them.

Coleman posted the statement on his official Facebook page. He did not take questions.

“Criminal organizations thrive where fear, silence, and institutional weakness prevail. They will not prevail in Liberia again,” Coleman said. “The Liberia National Police will not be intimidated, distracted, or deterred from enforcing the law.”

He said the force’s obligation runs to the law rather than to individuals. “Our commitment is not to personalities, political interests, or public applause,” he said. “It is to the Constitution, the laws of Liberia, and the safety and security of the Liberian people.”

Coleman said every case will be pursued on credible evidence, due process and lawful authority regardless of a suspect’s status or influence, and that the police will keep working with national and international partners to disrupt narcotics networks and bring suspects before the courts.

The statement names no case, no suspect and no institution. It does not say whether anyone has attempted to interfere with an investigation, or whether any such attempt has been referred for prosecution.

It came the same day Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti and Justice Minister Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh addressed the drug investigation at the Ministry of Information’s press briefing, where both named Coleman among the officials coordinating the effort.
