Liberia: Quita Dolo Kosso Gets Five Years For Airport Cocaine Trafficking

KAKATA, Margibi County – Quita Dolo Kosso, arrested at Roberts International Airport in July 2025 with 3.355 kilograms of cocaine in her luggage, was sentenced Wednesday to five years in prison after pleading guilty, closing her part in a prosecution that has since widened to put the LDEA agents who handled her arrest in the dock alongside her.

Resident Judge Victoria Worlobah Duncan of the 13th Judicial Circuit Court in Kakata imposed the term after accepting a plea agreement negotiated between state prosecutors and Kosso’s lawyers, and after questioning her to establish that the admission was knowing and voluntary.

Kosso, 39 at the time of her arrest, was taken into custody at about 6 p.m. on July 12, 2025, after arriving at Roberts International Airport aboard Kenya Airways Flight KQ887 from Bangkok, Thailand. The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency said its officers found the cocaine concealed in her luggage during screening and put its street value at US$181,008. She fell ill during the initial investigation, and on July 16 her lawyers, Cllr. Lafayette Gould and Julius R. Addy, asked for medical attention, which the agency approved. She was treated at JFK Medical Center.

The LDEA charged her on July 21, 2025, under four provisions of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act: Section 14.83 for trafficking and importation, Section 14.85 for sales, distribution, administration, delivery and transportation, Section 14.89 for possession, and Section 10.2 for criminal conspiracy. The trafficking counts are non-bailable under the law. The agency sent the file to the RIA Magisterial Court in Harbel, which lacks jurisdiction over felonies of that weight, and the case moved up to the circuit court in Kakata.

The case has since grown well past the courier. Kosso and co-defendant Abdullah Sheriff entered guilty pleas in May, while four other defendants, among them LDEA officers, denied the charges and remain on trial. A Nigerian national identified as Tony Obi was arrested separately over what the LDEA described as an attempt to bribe officers to secure Kosso’s release.

That trial has already broken down once. Duncan suspended it in June after defense lawyers told the court that LDEA officer Myron Swen approached jurors as they returned from the washroom on June 2 and urged them to convict Special Agent Joe I. Logan and Agent Lovette Flowers, the officers who arrested Kosso. Duncan said the allegations were grave and cast a cloud over the credibility of the trial, and she ordered an investigation in open court.

The five-year term sits well below what the same court imposed the last time a major trafficking case ran to verdict. In February, the 13th Judicial Circuit sentenced Nigerian national Prince Okeke to 15 years for unlicensed importation, illicit trafficking, criminal conspiracy and facilitation over more than eight kilograms of raw heroin brought through Roberts International Airport, worth close to US$389,000. Okeke has appealed to the Supreme Court.

Proceedings against the remaining defendants continue in Kakata.
