There is something remarkable about women who turn simple ideas into something larger than themselves, not because the journey is easy, but because they choose to keep going when it isn’t.

Mariam Mako Meiplay chose to keep going.

What started as a passion for fresh fruits and healthy eating has grown into a trusted brand serving families, events, and health-conscious customers across Liberia. Since launching Mako’s Fruit on Aug. 1, 2020, Meiplay has transformed that passion into a growing enterprise known for fresh juices, smoothies, packaged fruits, and artistic fruit displays. Behind the colorful products and loyal customer base is a story of persistence, self-belief, and the quiet determination of a woman who decided that waiting was not an option.

“I wanted to build a business that not only generated income but also encouraged healthier lifestyles within my community,” she said.

The inspiration came from a simple observation. She noticed that many people wanted healthier food options but struggled to find fresh, convenient choices. Rather than waiting for someone else to solve the problem, she created the solution herself, combining a passion for wellness with a desire to serve, and laying the foundation for what Mako’s Fruit would eventually become.

The Moment She Knew It Was Real

Every entrepreneur has a defining moment when a dream becomes tangible.

For Meiplay, that moment came when customers started returning, not once or twice, but consistently. They recommended her products to friends and family. They trusted her brand.

“When customers started returning regularly and recommending my products to others, I realized that Mako’s Fruit had the potential to become a sustainable business rather than just a hobby,” she said. “Their support gave me the confidence to dream bigger and invest more into growing the brand.”

That loyalty did more than validate the product. It changed the scale of her ambition.

On Being Underestimated

Building the business required more than a good idea. Access to funding was a hurdle. Establishing credibility was another. And there were moments, pointed, deliberate moments, when people underestimated her simply because she was a woman.

“There have been times when people doubted my capabilities or expected me to take a smaller role in decision-making,” she said. “Those experiences motivated me to work harder and demonstrate that women can successfully lead and grow businesses.”

Instead of allowing those experiences to discourage her, she used them as motivation. She focused on consistency, allowing her work and results to speak for themselves. Building confidence, she learned, was not about proving others wrong. It was about proving to herself that she belonged in every room she entered.

Quality as a Daily Commitment

Customers see the smoothies, the fresh juices and the beautifully arranged fruit displays. What they rarely see is the discipline required to maintain those standards day after day.

To Meiplay, quality is not accidental. It is intentional.

“We carefully select our fruits, maintain high hygiene standards, and follow consistent preparation processes,” she said. “Quality control is a daily commitment, and we regularly seek customer feedback to ensure we continue meeting and exceeding expectations.”

That commitment extends beyond the products themselves. Every order reflects the values on which the business was built: freshness, presentation, cleanliness and customer satisfaction.

There is also a reality to the work that outsiders rarely appreciate.

“Many people think it’s simply about selling food,” she said. “In reality, it involves sourcing quality ingredients, managing finances, marketing, customer service, maintaining food safety standards and solving problems every day behind the scenes.”

Social media has become an essential part of that operation. For Meiplay, platforms like Facebook and Instagram are not just promotional tools, they are how Mako’s Fruit builds relationships, attracts new clients and sustains the trust that keeps customers coming back.

The People Behind the Purpose

Throughout the journey, Meiplay’s family has been her most constant source of support. Their encouragement, advice and belief in her vision helped her navigate difficult moments and remain focused on her goals.

Balancing family life with entrepreneurship is not always easy, she acknowledges. But she believes it comes down to planning, discipline and making intentional time for both.

“Balance requires planning, discipline and support,” she said. “I prioritize my responsibilities, manage my time carefully and make sure to dedicate quality time to both my family and my business.”

The Message She Wants Women to Hear

The most powerful part of Meiplay’s story may be the message she hopes other women take from it.

She understands the fear that often accompanies starting something new, the doubts, the uncertainty, the feeling that conditions must be perfect before taking the first step. Her advice is shaped by experience, not theory.

“Start where you are with what you have. Don’t wait for everything to be perfect. Believe in yourself, keep learning and don’t let fear stop you. Every successful entrepreneur started with uncertainty, but persistence and determination make the difference.”

A Legacy Worth Leaving

Meiplay hopes Mako’s Fruit becomes more than a successful business. She wants it to serve as evidence that women are capable of building opportunities, creating jobs and turning ideas into reality.

“I hope to leave a legacy of courage, resilience and empowerment,” she said. “I want future generations to see that women can lead, innovate and make meaningful contributions to their communities.”

And then, quietly, she adds the measure by which she judges it all.

“If my journey encourages even one young woman to pursue her dreams, that would be a legacy worth leaving.”

That is the heart of Mariam Mako Meiplay’s story, not simply that she built a fruit business, but that she built it with determination, consistency and a belief that women belong wherever they dare to dream.
