MONROVIA — A senior student at the J.J. Roberts United Methodist School has filed a $300,000 lawsuit against the school and its Dean of Student Affairs, accusing the dean of inflicting a serious eye injury during a confrontation last December.
Richard Gbai, the student, alleges that Dean Dolo Mulbah struck him in the left eye with a wooden stick during a campaign-related incident on campus. The lawsuit, filed at the Civil Law Court in Montserrado County, claims the injury has caused lasting damage, including blurred vision and distorted images.
According to court documents obtained by The Liberian Investigator, the incident occurred in December 2024 after Gbai reportedly had a verbal exchange with a female student amid school election activities. The confrontation allegedly escalated, prompting Dean Mulbah to intervene physically.
Despite the severity of the injury, the student claims the matter was dismissed by police after Inspector General Gregory Coleman allegedly instructed investigators to drop the case. The student further alleges that Coleman gave the victim’s parents 50,000 Liberian dollars as a form of settlement.
Since undergoing surgery, Gbai reports continuing complications with his vision, including the appearance and disappearance of lines and other visual distortions.
The Civil Law Court has issued a writ of summons for Mulbah, School Principal Samuel Sagbeh, and the Board of Trustees to appear before May 31. The case is expected to proceed during the June Term of Court.
